Infectious Diseases are a continuing threat for citizens around the world. They cause suffering and death and impose an enormous financial burden on society. Antimicrobial drugs have saved millions of lives. However the emergence of drug resistance in bacteria, parasites viruses and fungi are threatening to reverse the medical progress of the past 60 years. Accordingly to health experts, one of the biggest threats facing man today is not war, but rather microbial resistant or a fast spreading deadly virus.
NEW  kills all known pathogens on contact. The above problems facing health institution may therefore be overcome  by using NEW.

There are potentially 2 broad fields of application of NEW in Facilities:

  • Disinfection & sanitation of water, surfaces, tools and equipment
  • Specific treatment applications

Surface disinfection
  • NEW generated on demand, is used in spray bottles with micro?bre cloths for hard surface disinfection such as floors, doors, handrails, tables, baby cots, crutches, wheelchairs and hands.
  • NEW fog is applied in positive / negative pressure operating theatres where airway ventilation is disinfected while transporting the flow.
  • Toilet facilities disinfection. NEW is dispensed as a fine spray in toilet facilities for hand washing and odor control.

Air Fogging (clean room)
  • Wide area room decontamination and aerosols.
  • It has been found that an aerosol supplying 10ml/m³ to 20ml/m³ NEW with a droplet size of 10um or less is enough to decontaminate the treatment room after 15 minutes' exposure.

Linen disinfection in laundries
  • Hospital launderettes use NEW for the final rinse to disinfect bed sheets, maternity gowns, towels and other garments.

    Infection and Hazardous Microbe control

    • NEW will be a major weapon in the battle for infection control acting swiftly and safely against all classes of hazardous microbes. The fluid is non-toxic, made from environmentally safe and sustainable materials, and can be used for surface disinfection and decontamination as well as dosing into water systems.
    • The detergent, AW has a wide range of uses within any cleaning process.

      FOOD PROCESSING

The global food production and processing industries are under pressure to supply an increasing quantity of wholesome, nutritious and quality assure product to a burgeoning world population. Food safety is one of the highest concern to producers and consumers.

Optimal quality assurance is being progressively eroded by the higher volumes of food products that needs to be processed. Existing sanitation procedures and remedies cannot accommodate the increase in plant throughput.

Furthermore, escalating microbial resistance to chemical biocides used in food processing plants is exacerbating the quality assurance and safety problems. The number of reported cases of food poisoning is on the increase despite enforced regulations and sophisticated management systems.

Coupled to the above, are increasing restrictions imposed through legislation by Governments, and purchase discernment form retailers and consumers, for healthier, effective and environmentally sustainable sanitation products and practices within food processing plants.

Usage of NEW offers to food processors a safe, cost effective alternative to current cleaning and sanitation products. NEW is a productivity and profitability enhancing quality assurance tool for the optimization of food processing plants.

      Hygiene management

      Hygiene comprises 2 basic steps:

      • Cleaning; removal of residual product, dirt and grim build up
      • Sanitation: disinfecting, elimination of microbial contamination

In food processing , the aspect of hygiene management comprises further 2 components:

      • CIP; Cleaning in Place (fixed equipment that cannot be accessed easily)
      • COP; Cleaning out of Place (movable equipment, floors and other accessable surfaces.

Both CIP and COP require a process of cleaning and disinfecting

Neutral Electrolyzed Water (NEW) can be used for disinfection throughout the entire food production process, as well for application directly on food, thus offering a solution that addresses the hygiene of the total processing plant.. Alkaline Water (AW) can be used for cleaning in particularly useful as detergent or surfactant.

        Applications:

The food processing industry constantly strives to reduce contamination from bacteria, spores, viruses, fungi, yeast and mould.  NEW can be used for the following applications:

        • The treatment and elimination of bio-film contamination in the processing plant.
        • Microbial contamination is eliminated in fresh foods by including NEW in the food preparation.
        • Cleaning-In-Place (CIP), of process plant and equipment, including pots, tanks, centrifuges, pumps, piping, filters, filler heads, pasteurizers and general surfaces.
        • The continuous decontamination of process water, thus eliminating the introduction of micro-organisms into the process through poor quality water.

Benefits to the Food Processing Industry
          • NEW is safe to use as a final pre-process rinse.
          • Improved Cleaning-In-Place (CIP) of the food-processing environment.
          • Decontamination and sanitation procedures become chemical free.
          • NEW has positive efficacy validation by a number of independent organizations.
          • NEW technology generates biocide and detergent products simultaneously; solution properties can be varied according to specific requirements.
          • NEW eliminates all known bacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses, moulds and spores.
          • Costs associated with product returns are reduced.
          • Increased customer satisfaction.

          • Introducing NEW to the processing techniques will not disrupt the current processing protocols.
          • Unlike traditional disinfectants and chemicals, NEW is non-toxic and non-irritant to humans.
          • Spoilage by microbial contamination of products is reduced.
          • Shelf life of products is increased due to reduced microbial contamination.
          • Process hygiene management is greatly improved.
          • Containing only activated and ionized constituents of water and salt, NEW is non-toxic, non-irritant, odorless and environmentally friendly
          • NEW can be applied in the form of liquid, fog or ice.

              LIFESTOCK

There is an urgent need in all animal production systems, for the replacement of anti biotics from animal feeding rations. Legislators and Health Authorities that have supported and implemented the ban, have not as yet provided a viable alternative that will ensure the maintenance of current production levels. Neither the Pharmaceutical Industry so far came up with a practical and effective alternative.

Aquaox’ devices developed, tested and validated over the last 3 -5 years, not only
provides a cheaper alternative but enhances production parameters beyond what had been achieved using antibiotics. Usage of NEW will undoubtedly have a huge impact around the globe, not only in animal production systems, but will extend the period of that antibiotics will remain effective in the treatment of humans.

The methods of application that have been optimized (e.g. disinfecting air with aerosols / fogging NEW in premises whilst animals are present), could be eventually adapted to situations where disease transmission in human occurs. (e.g. Shopping malls, Hotels, Airlines, Cruise-ships and public institutions).

Usage of NEW in Lifestock improves the profitability by optimizing the production parameters of intensive farming by elimination of pathogenic micro-organisms in the drinking water, feed, air and sewage.

              • Contamination in an animal production system can only derive from any of 5 sources:The premises itself; contamination carried over from the previous batch of animalsThe drinking water; contaminated water is a major problem, either form source water or surface water because of bio-film recontamination. The feed; mainly as a result of fungal toxins and bacterial growth Air contamination, from outside or dust particles inside
              • Mechanical transmission by vehicles, workers and visitors entering the premises

All of these sources of contamination are addressed thought the use of NEW and is applied through the following methods:

                1. Water Treatment

Controlling diseases and reducing mortalities, by continuous dosing of NEW into the drinking water, thereby eliminating pathogens. This treatment controls the pathogens in the upper intestinal tract, as opposed to the lower intestinal tract where antibiotics are required. Bio-film is a major source of recontamination in water systems and NEW has proven to be extremely effective against Bio-film.

                2. Air decontamination
NEW has been proved to be very effective in respiratory disease reduction. If NEW is fogged at intermittent intervals into the air space of the animal, the following happens:

                • Settling of dust particles; dust particles are negatively charged and are settled due to the high positively charged molecules present in the fog Elimination of pathogens; Once positively charged molecules come into contact with the pathogenic microbes, they are destroyed.
                • Climate control; Fogging is an effective method to increase the relative humidity levels as well reducing the temperature.
                • Reduction of hazardous gases; Oxidation of ammoniac reduces levels by 50%

                    Benefits to the Lifestock Industry

Usage of NEW result in a significant level of pathogen reduction, whilst climatic conditions are optimized to enhance production. The usage of NEW (if e.g. fogged into the air) kills bacteria, spores, viruses and fungi whilst completely safe (nono-cytotoxic) to animals and humans. Harmful gases are oxidized, and ammoniac levels reduced by approximately 50%. The costs associated with the usage of NEW are neglectable and the dependence on antibiotics reduced or eliminated. Finally mortality is reduced significantly.

                    AGRICULTURE & HORTICULTURE

Global agricultural production has been stagnating since the 90’s and the industry has been characterized by a mismatch between supply and demand. Further this industry is characterized by the following:

                    • High capital requirements (land & equipment)
                    • High input cost of production
                    • Unstable production volumes and prices
                    • Short shelf life of products and high spoilage rate (approximately 25% of production)
                    • Low returns on investments and long payback terms
                    • High risks (e.g. weather dependent and pathogen, pests can destroy whole crops in short time)
                    • Excessive use of chemicals, pesticides and anti-microbials resulting in increase microbial resistance and chemical residues in food.
                    • Progressive pressure on the availability of arable land in highly populated countries.Withdraw of farm subsidies due to ‘free trade’

The agricultural & horticultural industry is a strategic supplier of food to man and as such an extremely important industry, yet the riskiest and least profitable industries.

Usage of NEW offers yield enhancement and a pathogen /bio-film control system, saving production costs significantly. The increase in yield has been reported in actual field trials for the production of Barley, celery, tomatoes, lettuce and carnations as well as cucumbers, strawberries, grapes and flowers in particularly roses.

NEW will improve quality and extent shelf life of fresh products as well reduce production costs in terms of water consumption, usage of fertilizers and chemicals)

                    Applications:

                    • Treatment of irrigation water to eliminate pathogens.
                    • Recycling of process water after disinfecting waste water with NEW
                    • Disinfecting seeds, bulbs and potatoes prior to plantingWashing and disinfecting fruits after whilst harvesting
                    • Disinfecting storage premises and fogging harvested products to extent shelf life
                    • Reducing blockages of irrigations systems and nozzles due to Bio-film by adding NEW into irrigation water
                    • Providing clean air in greenhouses and reduce decontamination of products.
                    • Treatment of mildew on leaves and grapes by fogging NEW.

Benefits to the Agriculture & Horticulture Industry

Increased yield, longer shelf life, reduction in production costs and a residue free product.

                    WATER TREATMENT

There are two important processes in potable water treatment:

                    • Water Purification - to remove particular contaminants from a water source
                    • Water Disinfection - specifically, a purification process that kills or removes biological contaminants (cysts, bacteria, viruses, protozoans, etc.) from a water source.

Traditional chlorination systems can kill a range of pathogenic microbes, however, it has the following disadvantages,

                    • It taints the water,
                    • Is not effective against biofilms,
                    • Is subject to pH effects and other inconsistencies
                    • Is easily neutralised by organic materials
                    • Fails to kill cryptosporidium and other protozoa and
                    • Actually adds toxic chemical by-products (such as trihalomethanes) to the water in the disinfection process!

It is increasingly unpopular with both scientists and the public due to its tendency to interact with other chemicals in (drinking) water and produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds.

Traditional chlorination depends on releasing several forms of chlorine (together referred to as ‘free’ chlorine) into the water. These are namely some chlorine itself, hypochlorite ion and hypochlorous acid.  Hypochlorous acid is about 100 times more effective as a disinfectant than hypochlorite but the chlorination method only produces this in low levels.

                    Cooling systems

Legionnaires' disease, caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, is a sever form of pneumonia. In several hospital outbreaks, patients are thought to have been infected through exposure to contaminated aerosols generated by cooling towers. Legionellae resident within biofilms are a particular problem in cooling tower systems, and can prove difficult to eradicate by conventional means. It has been reported that biofilm bacteria can be up to 3000 times more resistant to standard chlorine disinfectants than unattached cells.

                    • Problem: biofilm and therefore dangerous outbreaks of legionnaires’ disease. Biological induced corrosion due to biofilm. Scaling and inefficiency issues directly related to scaling
                    • Solution: Continiuos dosing of NEW in to the cooling water kills all algae and prevents bio-film as well reduces scaling in the cooling system

                    Swimming pools

                    • Problem: Periodical superchlorination of the pool destroys wet suits, attacks and irritates skin, without effectively killing the Pseudomonas bacteria. Rashes, burnt eyes and sinuses. Corrosion due to evaporation of chlorine gases. Strict storage, handling and transport regulation makes the use of chlorine expensive and not preferred. Usage of pH+ and other chemicals to keep pH of pool stable.
                    • Solution: Dose an average of 1:800 NEW in the circulation water (after filtration and prior to the inlet of the pool) of indoor pools to keep the pool free of any bacteria. No more swimmers eyes or skin irritation, no chlorine smell.

                    Storm water
                    • Problem: Stormwater discharges are generated by runoff from land and impervious areas such as paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops during rainfall and snow events that often contain pollutants in quantities that could adversely affect water quality. Most stormwater discharges are considered point sources and require coverage by an NPDES permit. The primary method to control stormwater discharges is through the use of best management practices.
                    • Solution: NEW can destroy bacteria and improve stormwater quality so that it renders no dangers to the environment and human beings

                    Drinking Water

                    • Problem: drinking water in remote areas mostly depend on local disinfecting of ground, rain or surface water and requires dangerous transport of chlorine. If transported over a long distance quality of drinking water is not stable for different users as an overdosis chlorine has to be added to the drinkingwater to ensure contamination during transport.
                    • Solution: NEW offers alternatives for transport of chlorine as well provide solutions to keep drinking water quality stable by local dosage of NEW.

                    Sewage Water

                    • AW added into the waste water increases the surplus of electrons, that are needed for removal of heavy metals (industrial waste water treatment) or for the faster growing of the needed microorganisms (biological waste water treatment). AW is lowering the water tension and the growth of the organisms and the material exchange is significantly increasing. The efficiency of the biological cleaning is increasing significantly. The condition for the successful growth is a very low redox potential of the solution, the condition for stoping the growth is a very high redox potential.
                    • NEW is increasing the redox potential and by this way disinfects the water. High redox potential is destroying bacteria and Viruses. Waste water will be disinfected before releasing in the natural environment.

                    Closed Water Systems

                    • Effective for legionella control, water supplies can be continiously dosed with NEW to prevent and help reduce scale formation often seen in hard water areas. Also, NEW is periodically dosed to remove bio?lms that have been known to protect legionella from other forms of disinfection. These water lines are maintained with NEW to prevent bio?lms reforming.
                    • Elimination of bad odor, improving taste and turbidity.
